Can you convert a JPG to DST?
A JPG (or JPEG) is a flat photo of pixels, not stitches, so it has to be digitized before it can become a DST. Embify traces your JPG, cleans up the edges and writes a machine-ready DST file. Because JPGs use lossy compression, a crisp, high-contrast image works far better than a small or blurry one — flat logos give the cleanest sew-out.
What is a DST file?
A DST file (Tajima format) is the universal workhorse of machine embroidery. It carries the stitch data but not the thread colours, so you assign colours on the machine. Because almost every commercial machine reads DST, it's the safest choice when you're unsure which format you need.
How to convert JPG to DST
- Upload your JPG. Drop in your logo or artwork. Embify traces it to clean vector shapes automatically.
- Set the size and preview. Enter the real finished size (left chest, cap, full back…) and check the realistic 3D sew-out preview — exactly how it will stitch.
- Download your DST file. DST stores the stitches, so you set the actual thread colours on your machine. It's machine-ready, with the stitch path, jumps and trims already optimised.
The whole thing runs in your browser in a couple of minutes — nothing to install.
JPG to DST. FAQs
How do I convert a JPG to a DST file?
Upload your JPG to Embify, set the finished size, check the sew-out preview, choose DST and download. Embify auto-digitizes the image into stitches for you.
Why does my JPG look blocky when converted to DST?
JPG compression adds soft edges and noise. Upload the largest, sharpest version you have, or a PNG/SVG if possible, so Embify can trace clean edges into stitches.
Does a DST file keep my colours?
No: it stores stitches only, so you set the thread colours on the machine. If you need colours saved in the file, choose PES or JEF instead.
Is the JPG to DST converter free?
Yes: digitizing your artwork and previewing the result is free, with no card required. Downloading the finished file is £5 as a one-off, or a monthly plan if you convert regularly.
