Embroidery file formats explained

If you've ever been asked “what format do you need?” and weren't sure, you're not alone. Embroidery machines each expect their own file type, and the names give nothing away. Here's what each format is, which machine reads it, and how to choose.

First, what an embroidery file is

Unlike a JPEG or PNG, an embroidery file contains stitch commands, not pixels. It tells the machine where to place each stitch, when to change colour, and when to trim. The different formats are simply different ways of writing those commands, created by different machine manufacturers, which is why one machine can't always read another's file.

Which one should you pick?

Match the format to your machine brand:

When in doubt, DST is the safe choice, it's read by the widest range of machines. The only thing it doesn't carry is colour, which you set on the machine anyway.

Do I need to convert my file?

If you have a design in the wrong format, you can't just rename the file, the contents are structured differently. You need a tool that re-exports the stitches in the target format. Each format in more depth

DST (Tajima). The oldest and most widely supported format, dating back to Tajima's commercial machines. It stores pure stitch data: needle movements, colour-change stops and trims, nothing else. No thread shades, no design preview in some older machines, not even the design's name in a useful way. That bareness is also why it works everywhere. If you send a file to a commercial embroiderer and don't ask what they want, DST is what they're expecting.

PES (Brother, Baby Lock). The most common home-machine format. It carries the stitch data plus a thread colour palette and a thumbnail, so the design shows up in colour on the machine's screen. If you bought your machine in a high-street sewing shop, there's a good chance it reads PES.

JEF (Janome, Elna). Janome's own format, similar in spirit to PES: stitches plus colour information. Janome machines also often read DST, but JEF is the native choice and behaves best.

EXP (Melco, Bernina). A compact commercial format that, like DST, stores stitches without colour. Bernina machines often pair it with a separate information file, but the EXP alone will sew.

XXX (Singer, Compucon). Used by older Singer and Compucon machines. Carries colour information. If you've inherited a Singer machine, this is likely your format.

VP3 (Husqvarna Viking, Pfaff). The current format for Husqvarna Viking and newer Pfaff machines, with full colour and fabric information. It replaced the older HUS and VIP formats, so if your Husqvarna is reasonably modern, VP3 is the one to use.

Stitch files vs working files

One distinction saves a lot of confusion: there are two kinds of embroidery file, and they do different jobs.

Stitch files are what machines read: DST, PES, JEF, EXP, XXX, VP3. The design has already been compiled into individual stitches. You can sew them, but editing them meaningfully is hard, because the shapes are gone, only the stitches remain.

Working files are what digitizing software saves for itself: EMB (Wilcom), ART (Bernina software), and similar. They keep the original shapes, stitch settings and objects, so a digitizer can reopen and rework the design. Machines can't sew them directly.

The practical rule: keep your original artwork (or a working file) somewhere safe, and treat stitch files as the output you generate from it, per size and per format. When someone asks you for 'the EMB', they're asking for the editable source, not the machine file.

Why some formats keep colours and others don't

Every stitch file contains colour stops: points where the machine pauses so the thread can change. The difference is whether the file also says what the new colour should be.

PES, JEF, XXX and VP3 embed a palette, so the machine's screen shows the design in something close to the intended colours. DST and EXP just say 'stop here', and the machine displays whatever default colours it likes. The stitches are identical either way. With a DST, you simply set the real thread shades at the machine, in the order the design asks for them, and it's normal practice to include a colour sheet with the file so the operator knows the sequence.

Getting the file onto your machine

Once you have the right format, the last step is delivery. Most home machines take a USB stick: copy the file to the stick's root folder (or the machine's designated embroidery folder, the manual will say), plug it in, and the design appears in the machine's browser. Some Brother and Janome models also connect over Wi-Fi or a cable to their own apps, and older machines may use memory cards.

Two snags account for most 'my machine can't see the file' moments: the file is buried in a subfolder the machine doesn't scan, or the stick is formatted in a way the machine dislikes (FAT32 is the safe choice). If the design shows up but looks wrong, that's a format problem, go back a section. If it doesn't show up at all, it's almost always the stick.

Why are there so many formats anyway?

Because every machine manufacturer invented their own, decades ago, and none of them had any reason to cooperate. Tajima built DST for commercial machines in the 1980s and it spread because commercial embroiderers standardised on their hardware. Brother wanted colour screens on home machines, so PES carries a palette. Janome did the same thing their own way with JEF. Husqvarna went through three generations (HUS, then VIP, then VP3) as their machines gained features.

There's no technical reason a single format couldn't serve everyone. It just never happened, the same way camera makers each shipped their own RAW format. The practical upshot for you is smaller than it looks: the stitches inside every format are the same idea, and any decent tool exports them all. You only ever need to know one thing, which format your machine reads.

Sending a file to a commercial embroiderer

If you're not stitching this yourself, a little etiquette makes the job go smoothly and marks you out as easy to work with:

Embroiderers deal daily with customers who send a JPEG and call it an embroidery file. Turning up with a proper DST, a colour sheet and a size makes their day easier and often gets your job to the front of the queue.

Converting between formats: what's safe

Moving a design from one stitch format to another (PES to DST, say) is generally safe. The stitches transfer one to one; at worst you lose the colour palette, which you can re-set at the machine.

What's not safe is resizing a stitch file during conversion. Stitch density doesn't scale: enlarge a file and gaps open up, shrink it and it turns dense and brittle. A few percent either way is usually fine. Beyond that, go back to the artwork and digitize at the new size.

Frequently asked questions

Is DST or PES better?

Neither is 'better', they serve different machines. PES stores thread colours and suits Brother/Baby Lock home machines; DST is the universal commercial standard but stores no colour. If your machine reads PES, use PES; otherwise DST is the safest bet.

Can I convert a PNG or JPEG to an embroidery file?

Not by renaming it, an image has no stitch data. You need to digitize it, which generates the stitches. Embify can trace a PNG and produce a machine file directly.

Will a DST file have the right colours?

DST doesn't store colours, so the machine assigns them in sequence. You set the actual thread colours when you load the design.

Does DST lose quality compared to PES?

No. The stitches are the same; DST just doesn't carry the colour palette. A design sewn from a DST and the same design sewn from a PES look identical once the operator sets the right threads.

What is a VP3 file?

The current format for Husqvarna Viking and newer Pfaff machines. It stores stitches plus colour information and replaced the older HUS and VIP formats. Embify exports VP3 directly.

What's an EMB file, and why can't my machine read it?

EMB is Wilcom's working file, the editable source a digitizer keeps, with shapes and settings still intact. Machines only read compiled stitch files like DST or PES. If a digitizer sends you an EMB, ask for the stitch file in your machine's format too.

My machine isn't listed. How do I find its format?

Check the manual's 'supported file types' page, or try the machine format finder on this site. When nothing else is certain, DST is the most widely read format in existence, so test with that.

Can I get the same design in several formats at once?
