What is a DST file?
A DST file (Tajima format) is the universal workhorse of machine embroidery. It stores the stitch commands but not the thread colours, so you assign colours on the machine. Because almost every commercial machine reads DST, it's the safest choice when you're not sure which format you need.
Which machines use DST?
DST is the de facto standard for commercial embroidery and is read by Tajima, Barudan, SWF, Happy, ZSK and Melco machines, among many others. If you run a commercial or multi-head machine, or you're sending a file to a contract embroiderer, DST is usually what they'll ask for.
How to convert your logo to DST
- Upload your artwork (SVG is best; a clear PNG/JPG is traced automatically).
- Set the finished size and review the sew-out preview.
- Choose DST and download. You'll set the actual thread colours on the machine.
DST file FAQs
Does a DST file include colours?
No. DST stores stitches only, so the machine assigns colours in sequence. You pick the actual threads when you load the design.
Why is DST so widely used?
It's the long-standing Tajima commercial standard, and almost every commercial machine can read it, which makes it the safe universal choice.
Can I convert a PNG to DST?
Yes. Embify traces your image, digitizes it and exports a DST file. Digitizing and previewing are free with no card required; downloading the finished file is £5 as a one-off, or a monthly plan if you convert regularly.
