It's the most common question new embroiderers ask: I have my logo as a PNG, how do I get it onto my machine? You can't just rename the file, an embroidery machine needs stitch instructions, not pixels. Here's what actually has to happen, and the fastest way to do it.
Why renaming a PNG doesn't work
A PNG or JPG is a grid of coloured pixels. An embroidery file (PES, DST, JEF, EXP, XXX) is a list of needle movements, stitch types and colour changes. They have nothing in common, so changing the extension just gives your machine a file it can't read. The image has to be digitized, turned into stitches, first.
Step 1: trace the PNG to clean vector
Pixel edges are fuzzy, so the first step is to trace your PNG into crisp vector shapes (SVG). A bold, flat logo traces cleanly; a photo or heavily shaded image does not. Aim for a high-resolution image with a plain or transparent background for the best trace.
Step 2: digitize and preview
Once you have clean shapes, the auto-digitizer turns each one into stitches, satin for borders and lettering, fill for solid areas, and plans the colour order. Set the real finished size first (embroidery is size-specific), then check the sew-out preview so you can see exactly how it will stitch before committing thread.

What makes a PNG easy (or hard) to convert
Before you upload anything, it's worth knowing where your image sits on the difficulty scale, because the artwork decides more of the final quality than the software does.
Converts cleanly:
- A flat logo with solid colours and crisp edges
- Bold lettering at least 5 mm tall at the finished size
- Three to six colours
- At least 1000 px on the longest side
- A plain, white or transparent background
Converts with a little prep:
- Gradients and drop shadows (flatten them to solid colours first)
- Thin hairlines (thicken them or they'll vanish in thread)
- A busy background (remove it so the tracer sees only the logo)
- A smallish image (find the biggest original you can)
Struggles no matter the tool:
- Photographs and photo-realistic art, thread can't reproduce continuous tone
- Very fine detail and textures
- Tiny text, like a slogan under a logo
If your PNG is in the first group, you'll likely get a sew-ready file on the first pass. The second group rewards five minutes of cleanup. The third group is better redrawn in a simplified, bolder style before you convert it.
Five minutes of prep that doubles your quality
You don't need design software or any real skill for any of this, and it makes a bigger difference than any setting inside a digitizer:
- Find the biggest version of the image you own. Check your email, your designer's original files, your website's media folder. A 2000 px logo traces dramatically better than a 300 px one saved from a webpage.
- Remove the background. If your logo sits on a photo or a coloured box, strip it out so only the logo remains. Embify removes backgrounds automatically on upload, but the cleaner the input, the better the result.
- Flatten gradients to solid colours. Thread is a flat-colour medium. Decide yourself which solid colour each gradient becomes, rather than letting software guess.
- Thicken very thin lines. A hairline stroke has nothing for a needle to follow. Anything thinner than about 1 mm at the finished size should be thickened or dropped.
- Deal with small text now. Lettering below about 5 mm tall won't stay legible in stitches. Enlarge it, or delete taglines and small print before converting. Embify flags text that's too small to stitch at your chosen size, but it's better to fix it in the artwork.
PNG vs JPG vs SVG: which should you upload?

What actually happens when Embify converts your PNG
It helps to know what the tool is doing, because then the preview makes sense and you can judge the result like a digitizer would. When you upload a PNG, Embify:
- Removes the background and isolates the logo.
- Traces the pixels into clean vector shapes, smoothing the pixel staircase into crisp curves and separating each colour region.
- Assigns a stitch type to every shape. Narrow borders and lettering get satin stitch (the smooth, shiny column you see on polo logos), larger areas get fill stitch, thin lines get a running stitch.
- Chooses stitch directions, the angle the threads lie at, which controls how the light catches each shape.

- Compensates for fabric pull. Stitches pull fabric inwards as they sew, so shapes are drawn slightly wider than final to land at the right size.
- Plans the sewing order to minimise jumps, trims and colour changes, which means less machine time and fewer loose ends.
- Matches your colours to real thread shades so the palette translates to what's actually on a spool.
Then it renders the sew-out preview, a realistic picture of the stitched result rather than your original image. That distinction matters: you're approving the stitches, not the PNG.
Pick the finished size before you convert
This is the step beginners skip, and it's why files disappoint. Embroidery is size-specific: stitch density, satin widths and small-detail decisions are all made for one physical size. A file digitized at 90 mm doesn't scale up to a jacket back, and shrinking it turns it into a dense, thread-snapping brick.
Standard sizes, if you need a starting point: about 90 mm wide for a left chest, 100 to 125 mm for a cap front, 250 to 300 mm for a full back. Our sizing and placement guide has the full table. Nearly every fix on that list comes down to the same move: make the artwork bolder and simpler, then run it again. A conversion takes seconds, so trying three versions of your logo costs you about a minute.
The thirty-second checklist before you upload
Everything above, boiled down to what you actually do:
- Biggest, sharpest version of the PNG you can find, ideally 1000 px or more on the long side.
- Background gone, or at least plain.
- Gradients flattened to solid colours you chose.
- Text at least 5 mm tall at the finished size, or deleted.
- Hairlines thickened past 1 mm, or dropped.
- Finished size decided in millimetres, before you convert, not after.
Tick those six and the conversion usually goes right the first time. Miss a couple and you'll probably still get there, it'll just take a second pass once the preview shows you why.
From download to first stitch
Once the preview looks right and you've downloaded the file:
- Load it on the machine via USB stick, card or direct transfer, whatever your machine uses.
- Hoop the garment with stabiliser. Use cut-away stabiliser for stretchy knits like polos and fleece, tear-away for stable wovens like denim and canvas.
- Thread the colours in the order the file asks for them. If you exported DST, remember it carries no colour information, the machine will prompt each change and you choose the shades.
- Sew a test on scrap fabric first, ideally the same fabric as the real job. A two-minute test catches issues before they reach a garment.

Can I convert a PNG to PES for free?
You can digitize and preview a file on Embify for free before paying to download. Be wary of tools promising instant free PES files from any image, results on photos or detailed art are usually poor.
What's the best image to convert?
