Every embroidery file starts the same way: artwork has to be turned into stitch commands. The question is who, or what, does the turning. There are two routes, automatic and by hand, and they suit different jobs. Here's how they really compare, honestly and without a sales pitch, so you can pick the right one for the design in front of you.

What each one means

Hand-digitizing is a skilled person working shape by shape in specialist software, choosing every stitch type, direction, density and the order the design sews in. It's craft work, and a good digitizer's judgement shows in the result.

Auto-digitizing is software doing that translation for you: it detects the shapes and colours in your artwork, assigns stitch types and angles, plans the path, and exports a machine-ready file in seconds. The pattern is blunt: volume is what makes automation compelling. At one-off scale the gap is a takeaway coffee; at business scale it's a mortgage payment. The exception runs the other way too: a single flagship design for a showpiece jacket deserves a human even at ten times the price, because you'll sew it for years.
